Een jury van Mattel Barbie-experts selecteerde uit 30 inzendingen 5 finalisten en lieten bijna 9000 kinderen stemmen op hun favoriet.
En, om meisjes te interesseren voor een architectuur-carrière, organiseerde AIA workshops met 'a basic understanding of the role of an architect, the history of women in the architectural profession and short charette that exposed them to the design process'. Mooi. Ik ben voor meer vrouwelijke architecten.
Saillant detail over het winnende ontwerp
Barbies dreamhouse is helemaal niet zo 'groen'.. Architectuur criticus Lisa Rochon vindt het huis een 'travesty of architectural excess': "Oh, Barbie. You knuckle brain! What were you thinking!?". En ik ben het wel eens met haar kritiek wanneer ze zegt: "America has been damned by the tyranny of the excessively large house. Check the explosion of square footage over the last half century of the private home. Barbie's new home might better have been urban, intimate and affordable - something along the lines of the studios that the designers (who designed this Barbie-house) occupy themselves in Manhattan. But conventional wisdom in the nearly bankrupt United States says human-scaled, affordable spaces are unacceptable. Small may suit hard-core urbanists, but to many others, it's anti-American and old world. Where do you put the double ovens, the colossal flat screen and the meditation room?"
Ik had het trouwens een stuk interessanter gevonden als de ontwerpwedstrijd internationaal was geweest! Dan hadden Scandinavische en Nederlandse architecten ook mee kunnen doen. Dat had ongetwijfeld meer variëteit in inzendingen met zich meegebracht. En wellicht ook een mooier, groener winnend ontwerp?
